Osteoporosis  Michael T. McDermott, M.D. and Howard A. Shaw, M.D.  Discuss and recommend osteoporosis prevention for patients at low risk for fracture.  Use the World Health Organization’s fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) to assess risk for fracture. Explain the concept of least significant change and its use in determining patients’ response to therapy for os teoporosis and osteopenia.   Determine which patients on antiresorptive therapy may be appropriate candidates for a “drug holiday.”  List the advantages and disadvantages of estrogen therapy for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis  in postmenopausal women.
