Colorectal and Pancreatic Surgery Madhulika G. Varma, M.D. Distinguish between appropriate surgical choices for emergency and elective surgery for ulcerative colitis.  Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the ileal pouch and total proctocolectomy.  Discuss variables related to ileostomy surgery, including patient age, pouch creation techniques, and laparo­scopic vs open surgery.  Recognize the long-term morbidities associated with the ileal pouch, including pouchitis, bowel obstruction, and sexual dysfunction.  Explain why early surgery is indicated for pancreatic cancer. 

Bread and Butter Surgery Robert G. Cosman, M.D.  Explain the importance of adding oxaliplatin to a 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) regimen for patients with stage III colorectal cancer.  Identify patients with stage II colorectal cancer who are candidates for adjuvant chemotherapy, including those with stage IIB disease.  Recognize the risk factors for rectal prolapse.  Discuss appropriate studies for presurgical workup of patients with rectal prolapse.  Determine which patients are candidates for abdominal vs perineal repair of rectal prolapse, and list the advan­tages and disadvantages of both types of procedures.
