Mammograms and Heart Health

The 2 leading causes of women’s death in the U.S. are heart disease and breast cancer. Digital mammography gives us an important diagnostic opportunity to address heart disease in women.  Women who have calcifications in the breast arteries are likely to have calcifications in the coronary arteries as well. This could be life-saving information especially for asymptomatic and young women. Early detection allows at-risk women to focus on prevention or to receive early treatment. We need to be united in adjusting our practices to incorporate all of the information provided by a mammogram in providing optimum patient care. Click here to read more.
