Course Topics

Working with Suicidal Clients

Identify factors that increase risk for suicide in children; Recognize suicidal ideation and behavior independently of other mental disorders; Devise individualized safety plans in collaboration with clients; Counsel family members of high-risk patients about planning for means safety; Use structured screening tools and clinical interviews to assess risk for suicide.

Short Stature /Suicide

List the findings associated with different endocrine conditions resulting in growth delay; Order appropriate laboratory testing and imaging in children with growth delay; Identify the risk factors and warning signs of suicidality in children and adolescents; Use appropriate screening tools for depression and suicidality in children and adolescents; Recognize children and adolescents who require referral for immediate hospitalization or referral for ongoing mental health care.

Suicide Prevention/Trauma-Informed Care

Identify patients who may be at high risk for suicide; List historical, genetic, medical, and environmental risk factors for suicide; Work with local government agencies to implement models of suicide prevention at the level of the community and society; Manage care of a patient at risk for suicide; Collaborate with other mental health professionals to create a trauma-informed model of outpatient care.

Suicide /Gout

Identify patients who may be at high risk for suicide; List historical, genetic, medical, and environmental risk factors for suicide; Work with local government agencies to implement models of suicide prevention at the level of the community and society; Manage care of a patient at risk for suicide; Summarize clinical trial data evaluating cardiovascular outcomes of urate-lowering therapy.

Physician Burnout and Suicide

List Maslach's components of burnout; Recognize symptoms of burnout in a colleague; Act as a liaison on a committee tasked with advising hospital administrators about physician satisfaction; Distinguish between burnout and depression; Create a program to address burnout and suicide among clinicians working in a health care institution.
