Pneumonia Buster

Fighting severe bacterial pneumonia is seriously complicated by increasing antibiotic resistance. Recent lab research has revealed that the hormone hepcidin, produced in the liver, is critical for keeping the pneumonia bacteria from spreading through the body. It literally starves the bacteria by hiding the iron in the blood that the bacteria thrives on. Medication already exists that replicate hepcidin but it is used for chronic iron overload. It is hopeful that it can be put to new use in patients who may be deficient in the hormone and are more susceptible to infection. Click here to learn more.
