The WHO Declares Zika Virus a Global Health Threat

The WHO declared the mosquito-borne Zika virus a global health threat based on the possible link to an increase in microcephaly in newborns in Brazil last year where the incidents of Zika virus has also risen dramatically.  In the last few months, Zika virus has spread rapidly through the Americas and has been identified in 20 countries and territories.  Pregnant woman and those thinking of becoming pregnant are advised to avoid traveling to areas of active infection.  These areas include:  Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Barbados, Costa Rica, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guadelupe, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Nicaragua, Panama and St. Martin.
